Intial Ideas.
The intial ideas we had for the video were for the chorus and are very tightly based around the lyrics.
As the whole song is about names and three specifics are mentioned ('hell', 'Stacey' and 'Jane') we had the ideas of different people singing the different lines of the chorus, people who were very unlike the name they are singing (eg. men singing about being Stacey etc). Example of this we liked were from Michael Jackson 'Black Or White' and Keane 'Everybody's Changing'.
It would cut quickly between the different shots of people and maybe collect them all together to sing the title 'that's not my name'.
We had the idea of giving everybody in the video, including the background people, nametags to reinforce the idea of names.
The second part to the video would be for the verses. The verses would be based around a main character who would be singing all of them. The character would be walking around different locations with the action behind her mirroring the lyrics. The idea of the actions mirroring the lyrics is quite a simple one but may be greatly effectve. For example the lyrics:
'I miss the catch if they throw me the ball
I'm the last kid standing up against the wall'
Could show either the main character missing the ball and standing up against the wall as she sings, or the background characters doing this. We think it would be more interesting to combine the actions of both groups of characters so they interact eg. the people playing with the ball throw it to the main character as she walks past and pick it up again as she continues on her path.
The idea of following the character with the camera seems quite appealing but we do not know if we have equipment able to achieve this, so the shots may have to be still.
Another idea that came to us was based off the video by The Fray - 'How To Save A Life'. We liked the effect of writing on perspex in the video so the words seem to be floating. We could use a similar idea in the chrous wherein characters could write their own 'names' or have names already there to again, reinforce the idea of names and people not knowing who they are.
The song was described as 'girly spaz pop' by a reviewer and is slightly cheesy. Instead of trying to combat this we decided to go with it and make the video fun, poppy and cheesy instead of serious. An example of this would be Hellogoodbye and their video 'Here In Your Arms'.
The video is basically in two parts. The still based chrous and the fast paced movie-like verses. The concept is based on 'names' as this is the general idea of the song.
