Finishing off.

In the middle of the filming process a member of the group unexpectedly dropped out of college and obviously was no longer involved in the video.

Because he was the main character in the video we had some problems as we didn't have enough footage to finish. This was rectifed by some quick thinking and last minute action! The footage we have now is not what was originally planned, but was the best we could do on short notice.

We filmed a friend of one of the group members playing piano - this is meant to be the singer of the band with the other main male being just a character in the story.

Viewers were confused by the different girls throughout the video. We didn't manage to convey what we wanted, which was to show the main character stringing the girls along. We would have liked to show the girls seeing each other whilst being with the guy and a confrontation scene. Hopefully the video still makes sense without these extra parts.

Although a lot of things went wrong and the video didn't turn out quite how we expected, we are still pleased with the final result, especially considering how much harder we had to work to make it.

Feedback on roughcut

>Many people didn't understand the storyline and were confused by the fact there was more than one girl, when we are able to shot more then it will become more obvious to the audience.

>The majority liked the opening scene with the feet walking up to the door and as the door is opened the male character begins to sing.

>Good idea/acting/performance.

>End part dragged on too long.

>lip-syncing affective although more needed.

>Good pace at the beginning.

>Good variety of locations.

>Interesting to watch.

Overall we need to add more variety of shots and the storyline needs to be made more clear. Filming difficult as a member of our group, who happens to be the main character, has left college, therefore our media group. We hope to be able to get more filming completed over half term so we can get more footage.

Rough Cut

Thursday, 4 October 2007

PITCH

Our idea is to have one main male charcter who will be singing the song throughout. He will be singing to 3 different girls, who we will place in different locations. The beginning sees the male character picking up the first girl from her house, he will immediating start singing to her as she opens the door. It then shows them walking to a different location such as a pub. You then see the man pulling out a chair and it shows that he is on another date in another location when it moves to the second verse. In the chorus he is again, with another girl, this time in a park. The camera scans up to the sky and scans back down to show a different location, which will be a house. It then goes to the male character and a different girl inside the house watching TV, eating ice-cream. The next part is the chorus and the male character is with another girl and they are punting. The next verse then shows a party scene and the male is with one of the girl's dancing with and singing to her. The last part of the music video shows all three girls going up to the male character as they have found out about each other. The male character sings to each of the girls, in which they respond by slapping him and then they all leave one by one. This leaves the male character alone, ironically not 'Happy Together' with anyone, although he just shrugs and walks away as the song comes to an end.

Music Videos 2006

camera/editing/setting/performance/genre conventions

We noticed that the group had only used mid-shots and long shot, there were no close- ups or use of tracking/panning to interest the viewer, so it became boring seeing the same shots again and again.
The use of green screen is very effective as they had cut out the image of the main singer very well so it looked convincing to the viewer and makes the video more interesting because it has been placed on top of the rest of the video.
The settings are very basic, they have used different houses and rooms, which, although seems boring works with the theme of the song and the lyrics.
The acting was not that good but it also worked with the theme of the song and made it more comical to watch, the use of different costumes was also effective as it shows the different stereotypes within the video.
The genre of this video is comedy/rap/pop. This is shown through the 'cheezyness" of the video.

Inital ideas.

Imagine me and you, I do
I think about you day and night, it's only right
To think about the girl you love and hold her tight
So happy together

If I should call you up, invest a dime
And you say you belong to me and ease my mind
Imagine how the world could be, so very fine
So happy together

I can't see me lovin' nobody but you
For all my life
When you're with me, baby the skies'll be blue
For all my life

Me and you and you and me
No matter how they toss the dice, it has to be
The only one for me is you, and you for me
So happy together

Ba-ba-ba-ba ba-ba-ba-ba ba-ba-ba ba-ba-ba-ba
Ba-ba-ba-ba ba-ba-ba-ba ba-ba-ba ba-ba-ba-ba

So happy together
How is the weather
So happy together
We're happy together
So happy together
Happy together
So happy together
So happy together

ba-ba-ba-ba ba-ba-ba-ba

The lyrics of the song suggests that the singer is talking about a girl he wants to be with.

One idea is for the singer to be singing to many different girls having them all believe that they are the one he wants to be with.

Another idea is to have a female main character who is obssessed with the lead singer of the band who's singing the song.

Change of song.

Another group had picked the same song as us, so after a discussion we decided to pick a new song. The song we chose is 'Happy Together' by Johnny Panic.

Lyrics.

These are the lyrics that the video will be closely based on:

Four letter word just to get me along
It's a difficulty and I'm biting on my tongue and I
I keep stalling, keeping me together
People around gotta find something to say now

Holding back, everyday the same
Don't wanna be a loner
Listen to me, oh no
I never say anything at all
But with nothing to consider they forget my name
(ame, ame, ame)

They call me 'hell'
They call me 'Stacey'
They call me 'her'
They call me 'Jane'
That's not my name x4

They call me 'quiet girl'
But i'm a riot
Maybe 'Joleisa'
Always the same
That's not my name x4

I miss the catch if they throw me the ball
I'm the last kid standing up against the wall
Keep up, falling, these heels they keep me boring
Getting glammed up and sitting on the fence now

So alone all the time at night
Lock myself away
Listen to me, I'm not
Although I'm dressed up, out and all with
Everything considered they forget my name
(ame, ame, ame)

They call me 'hell'
They call me 'Stacey'
They call me 'her'
They call me 'Jane'
That's not my name
That's not my name
That's not my name
That's not my name

They call me 'quiet girl'
But I'm a riot
Maybe 'Joleisa'
Always the same
That's not my name
That's not my name
That's not my name
That's not my name

Are you calling me darling?
Are you calling me bird?
Are you calling me darling?
Are you calling me bird?

Intial Ideas.

The intial ideas we had for the video were for the chorus and are very tightly based around the lyrics.

As the whole song is about names and three specifics are mentioned ('hell', 'Stacey' and 'Jane') we had the ideas of different people singing the different lines of the chorus, people who were very unlike the name they are singing (eg. men singing about being Stacey etc). Example of this we liked were from Michael Jackson 'Black Or White' and Keane 'Everybody's Changing'.

It would cut quickly between the different shots of people and maybe collect them all together to sing the title 'that's not my name'.

We had the idea of giving everybody in the video, including the background people, nametags to reinforce the idea of names.

The second part to the video would be for the verses. The verses would be based around a main character who would be singing all of them. The character would be walking around different locations with the action behind her mirroring the lyrics. The idea of the actions mirroring the lyrics is quite a simple one but may be greatly effectve. For example the lyrics:

'I miss the catch if they throw me the ball
I'm the last kid standing up against the wall'

Could show either the main character missing the ball and standing up against the wall as she sings, or the background characters doing this. We think it would be more interesting to combine the actions of both groups of characters so they interact eg. the people playing with the ball throw it to the main character as she walks past and pick it up again as she continues on her path.

The idea of following the character with the camera seems quite appealing but we do not know if we have equipment able to achieve this, so the shots may have to be still.

Another idea that came to us was based off the video by The Fray - 'How To Save A Life'. We liked the effect of writing on perspex in the video so the words seem to be floating. We could use a similar idea in the chrous wherein characters could write their own 'names' or have names already there to again, reinforce the idea of names and people not knowing who they are.

The song was described as 'girly spaz pop' by a reviewer and is slightly cheesy. Instead of trying to combat this we decided to go with it and make the video fun, poppy and cheesy instead of serious. An example of this would be Hellogoodbye and their video 'Here In Your Arms'.

The video is basically in two parts. The still based chrous and the fast paced movie-like verses. The concept is based on 'names' as this is the general idea of the song.

Music Video's we like : Continued again

Michael Jackson - Black Or White

This is a good example of what we want to do because it shows different types of peopel and we are also wanting to show the different extremes of people in a similar way.

The Fray - How to save a life (Version #2)

In this video, we got the idea of having the names flying across the screen and all over the place. And we are concidering using this idea in our music video to go with the whole names theme in the song.

Keane - Everybody's Changing

This song is about people changing adn also relates to what were doing with the whole changing peopel and not keeping the same people for each section. Just a few helpful ideas for our video.

Music Video's we like : Continued

Hellogoodbye - Here in your arms

This video is uber cheesy. Which our song is, so it works perfectly!
We have a vibe that it will help us very muchly. And we like the song =D

The Academy Is... - Everything we had

We like the effects it has. The way it rewinds and the way that everyone is still but he still moves.
Just generaly a cool video we think!

Music Videos We like

Arctic Monkeys - Brian Storm

We were drawn towards this video because it is placed with the song itself very well. It has lots of quick flashes of different things happening and keeps you interested even though it is a pretty simple video with the band drumming and girls dancing.
Also has clever little random pics related to the words that are said in the song.
